ARTnews MAGAZINE CELEBRATES 100TH ANNIVERSARY
SPECIAL ISSUE, TOURING SMITHSONIAN EXHIBITION,
AND BOOK CHRONICLE A CENTURY OF ART AROUND THE GLOBE
New York, NY - ARTnews, the most widely-circulated art magazine
in the world and one of the oldest independently-run magazines,
will commemorate its 100th anniversary this November. To celebrate
this milestone event, ARTnews will publish a special November
issue of the magazine, the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery
has organized a traveling exhibition, "Portrait of the Art World:
A Century of ARTnews Photographs," and Yale University Press
will publish a book by the same name. The exhibition is sponsored
nationally by AXA Art Insurance Corporation.
As revealed in the book's introduction by journalist Pete Hamill,
ARTnews has consistently reported on art's impact on our
culture, from the Armory Show to the current rage for digital art.
Just as art in America evolved from an elite concern to a public
interest, ARTnews evolved from a small-circulation broadsheet
for collectors into an award-winning international news magazine
on the art world for general readers. In spite of the Great Depression,
two world wars, various ownerships, several name and mission changes,
and ups-and-downs in circulation and revenue, ARTnews has
survived and prospered due to the dedication and vision of six successive
editors.
Editor and Publisher Milton Esterow says, "ARTnews is proud
to remain an independently-owned magazine in an era where this has
become a challenge and a rarity. We are committed to our role as
news journalists, and to our editorial vision that understands the
art world as a place where news happens. The history of ARTnews
documents the changes in the art world over the last 10 decades
and the changing perception of art, which the magazine has both
mirrored and helped mold."
