For one hundred years, ARTnews has been the highest circulation art magazine in the world, reporting on the art, personalities, issues, trends and events shaping the international art world. The story of the magazine’s history tells the story of art as it has unfolded in the last century. One of the few independently owned magazines in America, ARTnews will celebrate their centennial with a special issue of the magazine in November, and with Portrait of the Art World, a book and companion exhibition sponsored by The National Portrait Gallery/Smithsonian, which will tour the New-York Historical Society (New York), the International Gallery/Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC), the Elmhurst Art Museum (Elmhurst, Illinois), and other locations.
